Details

In the cleanroom of semiconductor chip manufacturing, even the tiniest speck of dust can be as fatal as a meteorite, capable of scrapping wafers worth a fortune. Here, Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) have become indispensable logistics backbones, and their wheels—the point of contact with the floor—serve as the first line of defense in protecting the pristine environment. Among various materials, specially engineered polyurethane wheels have emerged as a preferred choice for high-end semiconductor cleanroom AGVs, thanks to their unique properties.

I. Why Polyurethane? Meeting the Extreme Demands of Semiconductor Cleanrooms

The semiconductor manufacturing environment imposes nearly on AGV wheels, which ordinary wheel materials simply cannot meet.

  1. Extremely Low Particle Generation: Standard rubber or polyurethane wheels can generate significant particles during rolling, turning, and braking due to friction. These particles may suspend in the air, contaminating process equipment and products. In contrast, the low-particle polyurethane formula developed specifically for cleanrooms greatly reduces particle generation during friction by optimizing material structure and additives. This is the most fundamental prerequisite for their entry into cleanrooms.

  2. Silicone-Free & Low VOCs: Silicones (oils, greases) or other Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) present in wheel materials may slowly volatilize, causing molecular-level contamination on sensitive wafer surfaces, thereby affecting processes like photolithography and etching. Therefore, cleanroom-grade polyurethane wheels strictly adopt silicone-free formulations and use low-volatility plasticizers and curing agents to eliminate the risk of chemical contamination at the source.

  3. Excellent Cleanability: Cleanrooms require regular cleaning with potent disinfectants like isopropyl alcohol. Wheels must withstand repeated wiping with these chemicals without degrading. High-quality polyurethane materials offer good chemical resistance, and their dense, non-porous surfaces make cleaning simple and efficient, without harboring contaminants.

Beyond Cleanliness: Comprehensive Performance Advantages of Polyurethane Wheels

In addition to meeting cleanliness requirements, polyurethane wheels provide multiple guarantees for the efficient and stable operation of AGVs in semiconductor fabs.

  1. Excellent Load Capacity & Wear Resistance: Polyurethane material offers high load-bearing capacity and abrasion resistance, ensuring that wheels do not wear out too quickly when AGVs transport heavy Front-Opening Unified Pods (FOUPs), thereby extending maintenance cycles and reducing production interruptions caused by upkeep.

  2. Smooth & Precise Operation: Polyurethane wheels provide good elasticity and grip, enabling smooth, low-vibration travel. This is crucial to prevent precision wafers on AGVs from shifting or vibrating due to bumps

  3. Protecting Valuable Flooring: Semiconductor cleanroom floors are typically paved with high-value anti-static epoxy flooring. The relatively soft polyurethane material effectively reduces scratching and wear on the floor, protecting facility infrastructure.

  4. Static Control: Polyurethane wheels with Anti-Static (ESD) properties can be custom-produced by adding conductive materials to dissipate static charges generated during operation to the ground, preventing Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) from damaging integrated circuits that are highly sensitive to static electricity.

Application Scenarios & Grade Matching

The use of polyurethane AGV wheels is not one-size-fits-all but varies according to specific cleanroom classifications.

  1. ISO Class 5 (Class 100) & Higher: In core process areas, highest-grade low-particle polyurethane wheels must be used. These wheels are typically paired with magnetic guidance technology, as magnetic navigation is embedded in the floor, avoiding the friction-induced dust risk that sensors in laser or vision navigation might bring, achieving true low-friction, dust-free operation.

  2. ISO Class 6-7 (Class 1,000/10,000): In cleanroom corridors or buffer areas, cleanroom-grade polyurethane wheels are also required, though their sealing standards and lubrication requirements may be slightly lower than those in the highest-grade areas.

Conclusion

In the semiconductor industry, where precision is measured in nanometers, every detail determines success or failure. The polyurethane AGV wheel, seemingly an ordinary component, is in fact a highly engineered product. It perfectly balances the four core needs of ultra-clean, durability, smoothness, and safety, ensuring that AGVs can operate safely, reliably, and without contamination in an extremely sensitive environment. Please contact us, and our technical experts will reply within 24 hours.
