Custom Miniature OHS Wheels for South Korean Cleanroom AMHS

Customer Background

The customer is a renowned South Korean overall service provider of AMHS (Automated Material Handling Systems) for smart logistics, with business widely focused on precision industrial fields such as semiconductors, PCBs, new energy, and high-end manufacturing. Its product matrix comprehensively covers overhead handling equipment OHS and OHT as well as ground mobile robots AGVs and AMRs, complemented by self-developed scheduling control systems and smart manufacturing software.

Challenges

In the new plant construction planning of a large-scale semiconductor wafer fab, the customer needed to bulk-purchase matching coated wheels adapted to the travel mechanism of its OHS (Overhead Shuttle). Combined with the engineering drawings provided by the customer, the overall size of this travel wheel is extremely compact, an axial total width of 22.2 mm, and a precision M2.5 threaded hole and pin hole mating structure.

In the field of component manufacturing, "the smaller the wheel size, the more the machining and coating difficulty increases geometrically":

Extremely difficult micro-machining control: Performing multi-stage stepped holes, threads, and pin hole precision turning-milling composite machining on such a tiny metal wheel core can easily lead to out-of-tolerance deviations if any carelessness occurs.

Thin-walled polyurethane coating prone to deformation: A small wheel diameter means that the polyurethane coating layer is relatively thin and stress is concentrated, making it extremely prone to debonding, cracking, or profile deformation under 7 x 24 hours of high-intensity operation.

Dual pressure of cleanliness and antistatic performance: Combined with the rigorous cleanroom environment, the drawings explicitly specify that it needs to reach Anti-static 3 grade: Level 3, and the surface must be smooth and uniform, free of glue runs and peeling defects, with extremely high requirements for deburring and flash removal.

Faced with such high-difficulty and high-precision miniaturized customization demands, the customer urgently needed to find a long-term component supplier with both strong technical strength and mature craftsmanship.

Our Solutions

Aiming at the challenges of this miniature OHS wheel's small size, high precision, and rigorous working conditions, we relied on our deep technical accumulation to tailor a high-end polyurethane (PU) coated wheel customization solution:

Miniature precision molding and tooling innovation: Aiming at the ultra-small outer diameter of φ25 mm and complex stepped structures, high-precision special molds and fixtures were independently designed, successfully overcoming the industry pain points where small-sized coated parts are prone to eccentricity, uneven wall thickness, and molding deformation.

Cleanroom-grade polyurethane formulation system: An optimized elastomer formulation was adopted to endow the miniature wheel body with incomparable tear strength and dynamic fatigue resistance, ensuring ultra-low wear and extremely low dust peeling under continuous high-load operation.

Precise antistatic level 3 technology: The technical bottleneck where conductive fillers are difficult to evenly disperse in the miniature coating layer was broken through, stably controlling the antistatic performance to the Level 3 standard requirement, which efficiently dissipates static electricity while preventing secondary pollution to the cleanroom caused by filler precipitation.

Rigorous quality control standards: Strictly following the technical requirements of the drawings, refined deburring, dynamic balance testing, and full-size smoothness checks were completed to ensure the wheel profile is straight and flat, free of glue runs and peeling defects.

Rigorous bearing material selection: Featuring a high-precision aluminum alloy 6061 bearing material configuration to ensure optimized structural weight and mechanical reliability.

Implementation Results

Through the successful delivery of this high-difficulty miniature component, this batch of custom polyurethane coated wheels successfully passed the rigorous laboratory bench tests of the Korean customer and the on-site verification of the semiconductor clean factory:

Ultimate process verification: Perfectly cracked the spell of manufacturing difficulty and easy deformation of small-sized coated wheels, with all dimensional tolerances and the M2.5 mating structure perfectly matching the drawing specifications.

Outstanding operating performance: In 7 x 24 hours of continuous full-load operation, the miniature wheel body exhibited low temperature rise, no delamination or peeling, and the antistatic and cleanliness indicators comprehensively reached the Level 3 standard.
